From the ice to the bench women’s hockey continues to grow across Canada. Since the creation of the PWHL we have seen the women’s game continue to grow both on and off the ice, with new opportunities for girls and women in sports.
In season three the PWHL has bigger broadcast rights and more Takeover Tour stops, growing the PWHL’s footprint, bringing in new fans from coast-to-coast. Through expansion they have continued to grow their fan bases, with more local teams and opportunities to see games.
One of the biggest things with the PWHL has been, “if you can see her, you can be her,” and the players have taken this one step further, with a lot of players hosting their own hockey camps in their hometowns, to bring more girls into the sport.
So it was no surprise that Hockey Canada set another record with 115,000 female players registering across the country. With the continued growth of the game Hockey Canada reaching their goal of 170,000 female player registrants by 2030, seems very likely.
Beyond the game itself Hockey Canada also saw a 12.6% increase in female officials, totaling 4,580 in 2025. This is a significant accomplishment as the women’s game has rippled into other areas creating more opportunities, with more leagues, more teams, and more games.
Expanding on that, we’ve also seen growth behind the bench now with 6,322 female coaches across the country. Having female coaches within the sport is going to be crucial for the continued growth of the game as it has proven to improve retention rates and keep girls in sport longer.
