The Minnesota Frost are back in the win column following an overtime thriller in Toronto.
Halfway through the first period Denisa Křížová opened the scoring with her first of the season, to give the Frost the first lead of the game. The Frost were looking to carry the lead into the second period but Emma Woods had different plans finding the equalizer with under two minutes to go in the first.
In the second period it was Daryl Watts for the Toronto Sceptres finding their first lead of the game, as the Frost looked to battle back. But the Sceptres were able to hold the lead into the third period.
In the third period, it was Frost besties Grace Zumwinkle and Taylor Heise connecting for the equalizer on the power-play. Both teams continued to fight with the Frost holding the edge, but the goalies held it down, sending the match to overtime.
About midway through overtime the Sceptres took another penalty, giving the Frost a 4-on-3 advantage. It didn’t take the Frost long setting up off the faceoff, as Taylor Heise fired with Kelly Pannek finding the game-winning tip.
Taylor Heise
Taylor Heise has continued to deliver in the PWHL since being drafted first overall in the inaugural draft. With her two point performance in Toronto, she now leads the league in points with 4 goals and 15 assists. Outside of the PWHL, Heise has found her footing with the USA National team, through the Rivalry Series and her Olympic debut, where she found the assist on Keller’s golden goal. Though her impact has extended far beyond the game itself, as she continues to inspire the next generation.
Goalie Talk
Well the Frost have a strong offense and defensive core their biggest strength comes from the goalie duo put in place. Since the beginning of the league we have seen Hensley and Rooney emerge as the best goalie duo in the league, well they haven’t been a front runner for any individual goalie awards, they have been paid in Walter Cups.
With expansion nearing the duo is likely to split up in year four the key for the Frost will be putting together another pair through the draft, this year’s goalies includes Martina Fedel who represented Italy in their first Olympic win in women’s ice hockey and is having a successful year with the Guelph Gryphons; Andrea Braendli who represented Switzerland, bringing home their first medal in twelve years; Tia Chan, who was named the 2025-26 Hockey East Goaltender of the year for her performance with the UConn Huskies.
Based on the current contracts Maddie Rooney is likely to be the keeper, signing a three-year extension through the 2027-28 season. Well, Nicole Hensley is only signed through this season, it is likely she will get to return home to Colorado as Denver seems to be a popular destination for expansion.
