The (8) Montreal Carabins upset the (1) UBC Thunderbirds in a three-round shootout to advance to the U Sports Semi-Final Round.
This is the first time the teams have met this season, playing in different conferences, creating an unfamiliar environment. In the first period the teams seemed evenly matched with the game going back-and-forth with UBC holding a slight advantage in shots on goal.
The second period was a whole different story with Janelle Mentor putting the Carabins on the board. As the period progressed the Thunderbirds continued to press, ultimately finding their first from Grace Elliott on the powerplay. But Montreal would hold the advantage heading into the third period after a late short-handed goal from Chloe Duchesneau.
In the third the Thunderbirds struck first with Jaylyn Morris finding the equalizer, followed by teammate Karine Sandilands just over three minutes later to find their first lead of the game. However, the Carabins weren’t ready to give up as Juliette Rolland found the answer, once again tying the game. With regulation coming to an end the teams headed to overtime, but neither side was able to finish, forcing a shootout.
In the shutout it was Jade Picard who was the hero for the Carabins, punching their ticket to the Semi-Finals where they will play the winner of the UNB Reds vs Ottawa Gee-Gees game, tomorrow at 1 PM (EST).
