U22 Shakeups Continue in an Action-Packed Weekend

This was full of U22 action that shook up the standings, with a whole new look to the playoff picture. So here’s a look at this weekend's action:
Friday Night Lights
Cambridge Rivulettes vs North York Storm
Kicking off the weekend was the Cambridge Rivulettes taking on the North York Storm, in what ended up as a blowout in favor of the Rivulettes (4-1) helping them jump up to sixth in the standings. The game-winner came off the stick of Kendra Restauri on the powerplay with under two minutes left in the second period.
London Devilettes vs Bluewater Hawks
Rounding out Friday night was the London Devilettes taking on the Bluewater Hawks, both of which entered the weekend outside of the playoff picture. But after a win in the shootout the Hawks jumped back into the picture. Now this was a game filled with penalties, resulting in several power-play opportunities for both sides. Well the night still ended in a loss for Devilettes not all was lost as they kept up with a strong Hawks offence, showing what they can do. They are going to be a team to watch this season as they continue to push for a playoff spot, if anything I think this game gave them the spark they’ve been needing.
Saturday
East Ottawa Stars vs Ottawa Senators
Starting off Saturday’s slate was the East Ottawa Stars taking on the Ottawa Senators who were battling to take over the number one spot for the Stoney Creek Sabres. And they put on a show, with a massive 5-1 win over their city rival. So far this season the Stars have struggled to find their footing despite strong goaltending. It is still early in the season and there’s lots of time to get back into the playoff picture, but with a lot of strong offences around their league they’re going to need to dig deep and get the spark on offence if they hope to compete.
Windsor Southwest Wildcats vs London Devilettes
Then it was the Windsor Southwest Wildcats taking on the London Devilettes who had a tough shoutout loss Friday night. But that confidence they could hang with one of the league’s top teams was exactly what they needed as they came into Saturday looking for more, with a 3-0 shutout. While they are still outside of the playoff picture they are on the rise and a team to watch in the coming weeks.
OHA Mavericks vs Kingston Ice Wolves
Then it was the OHA Mavericks taking on the Kingston Ice Wolves who were looking to crack the top 10 and they did, with a 3-1 victory over the Mavericks they finished the weekend just shy of the top 5 tied for points with the Mississauga Hurricanes but one more game played. While the Mavericks continued to struggle finding another loss, staying out of the playoff picture.
Toronto Leaside Wildcats vs Cambridge Rivulettes
Rounding out Saturday’s slate was the Toronto Leaside Wildcats taking on the Cambridge Rivulettes in a tight matchup. The action was back and forth with both teams with 2-2 tie at the end of the second period. But ultimately Daniela Renzetti found the game-winner early in the third as the Wildcats held off the Rivulettes to find a narrow win, finishing the weekend just outside of the top 10, but well in the playoff picture. While the Rivulettes still held on to their spot within the top 10, sitting 7th overall in the league.
Sunday
North York Storm vs Toronto Aeros
Kicking off Sunday’s slate was the North York Storm taking on the Toronto Aeros both of which are in the playoff picture. But the Storm came in hot after falling 4-1 Friday night to the Rivulettes looking to end the weekend on a high with a 2-1 lead late in the third the Aeros pulled their goaltender hoping to fuel a comeback or force extra time but it was the Storm firing in the empty-net goal to secure the win jumping into third overall in the standings.
Kingston Ice Wolves vs Ottawa Senators
Then it was the Kingston Ice Wolves taking on the Ottawa Senators who were looking to grow their lead over the Stoney Creek Sabres after taking over the number one spot. But the Wolves didn’t come to play looking to walk away with a weekend sweep, pulling out a narrow 2-1 win over the current league leader once again proving why they’re a team to watch.
Bluewater Hawks vs Windsor Southwest Wildcats
Then it was the Bluewater Hawks and Windsor Southwest Wildcats who were both looking to sweep their weekend matchups. But it was the Hawks putting on a show with a 3-0 win showing why they are considered one of the league’s top offences and a team to watch this season.
East Ottawa Stars vs OHA Mavericks
Then rounding out the weekend was the East Ottawa Stars taking on the OHA Mavericks, both teams are outside of the playoff picture and was looking like it could be a close matchup heading into the game, but the Mavericks game in with fire pulling out a 5-2 win as they look to light up and move into the playoff picture.
