The New York Sirens came to Toronto hungry, looking for their first win in the city since the PWHL’s inaugural game January 1st, 2024. The Sirens entered the game on a 3-game win streak, that kicked off in Dallas with their 4-3 win over the Seattle Torrent.
Sirens rookies continued to lead the way with Anne Cherkowski and Maddi Wheeler firing off the first shots of the game. But it would be the Sceptres who took the edge in the first, outshooting the Sirens 10-8, though neither team would be able to finish with Kayle Osbourne and Elaine Chuli standing tall in net.
Kristýna Kaltounková rushed the offensive zone passing to Casey O’Brien, who tried to drag the puck to Chuli’s glove side, with chaos in front of the net, Kaltounková was able to free the puck to Jincy Roese. Roese then played the puck back in front of the net for Kaltounková, who was able to get a stick on it, to score between Chuli’s legs.
The third period opened with a fast and physical pace, with both teams exchanging hits. The Sceptres, eager to fight back to get their second win at home, found lots of looks, but the Sirens and Kayle Osbourne weren’t letting anything through. In Toronto’s last couple of games, we have seen them get lots of looks and not be able to finish. With teams continuing to heat up ahead of the Olympic break, the Sceptres need to refind their rhythm on offence.
With just over two minutes remaining in the third period, the Scpetres attempted to pull Elaine Chuli from the net as she was skating off, Taylor Girard took notice and sent the puck flying down the ice. But it was Chuli with a big dive to block the attempt to keep the Sceptres in the game.
With less than 10 seconds left, it was Kristýna Kaltounková who called game, collecting the puck along the boards, firing off from the Sirens defensive zone for the empty netter.
With the win, the Sirens move up to second overall, just one point behind the Boston Fleet, who have held the top position all season. While the Fleet still have 2 games in hand, they’ve taken back-to-back losses, only accumulating one point for a shootout loss. This has opened up the playing field at the top of the standings.
Sirens on the Hunt
The New York Sirens are on the hunt for their first playoff run after finding themselves at the bottom of the standings two years in a row. This is the best performance we have seen from New York, and their losses in their past two seasons are more than paying off, with their rookies continuing to lead the way.
Dayle Ross Debut
Adding to the Sirens' bolstering rookie class, Dayle Ross made her PWHL debut. Ross has been on the LTIR since the beginning of the season, dealing with a lingering knee injury from last season, while she was with St. Cloud University, where she led the NCAA and WCHA with 104 blocked shots, for a program record.
Dayle Ross was selected in the 4th round, 25th overall in the 2025 draft. Her debut has been long-awaited and comes at a great time for the Sirens, as they make the push towards their inaugural playoff run.
Last night, Ross was slotted into the Sirens' lineup as the extra defender, so her playing time was limited, but packed a punch. If her first game is any preview of what’s to come from the young defender, the league better take notice.

Kristýna Kaltounková
With her pair of goals in Toronto, Kaltounková moves up to second in the league with 7 goals, just one behind Kendall Coyne-Schofield. She is also now on a three-game goal streak and will look to continue this momentum into the Olympics as she represents Czechia in Italy in her Olympic debut.
Up Next
Up next, the Sceptres head to Boston January 14th to take on the Fleet in their second matchup of the season. In their first meeting, the Fleet took the game 3-1 in Toronto’s homeopener. The Fleet are looking to bounce back from back-to-back losses as the Sceptres look to snap a four-game loss streak.
While the Sirens return home January 16th to take on the Minnesota Frost in their first matchup of the season. The teams last played against each other in pre-season, where they split the two games. The Sirens look to keep this momentum rolling and extend their four-game win streak.
