The New York Sirens took on the Montreal Victoire in the first game of the new year. The Sirens entered riding a two-game win streak, while the Victoire entered on back-to-back losses, looking to start fresh in the new year.
The Victoire took an early lead courtesy of Laura Stacey, who wrapped her stick around Kayle Osbourne to get the first goal of the new year under four minutes into the game. New York took a while to answer, but they did with rookie Anna Bargmen, scoring her first in the PWHL, off a pass from Anne Cherkowski.
In the second period, it was Kirsten O’Neil who gave the Sirens the lead, off a pass from Maddi Wheeler. But minutes later, Emma Fecteau headed to the box, giving the Victoire a power-play, where Captain Marie-Philip Poulin did what she does best and came in clutch, tying the game. In the second half of the period, it was New York rookie Kristyna Kaltounkova, who found the back of the net off a pass from Casey O’Brien, reclaiming the lead heading into the third period.
In the third period, Paetyn Levis struck first, extending the Sirens' lead. The Victoire were on the hunt for a comeback and pulled goaltender Sandra Abstreiter. On the man advantage, rookie Natálie Mlýnková found the back of the net with less than 30 seconds left on the board. But it would be too late for a comeback with New York not allowing the Victoire another shot.
With the win, the Sirens climb up to third in the standings, now sitting with 15 points.
Rookies Making Noise
The New Sirens rookies have been a standout all season, leading the league in rookie points. This game was no different, with Anna Bargmen getting her first goal, Kristyna Kaltounkova notching her fifth and assists coming from Anne Cherkowski, Maddi Wheeler and Casey O’Brien.
First overall pick, Kristyna Kaltounkova, has been a major highlight for New York this season, fitting into their lineup well. She was able to find her footing early, with a 66.7% faceoff win percentage in her first game. Kaltounkova has four goals on the season, including one in their game yesterday against the Vancouver Goldeneyes, with a 54.5% faceoff win percentage.
Casey O’Brien has made her presence known. She started the season below the radar, doing little things, finding her footing, then exploded at the Dallas Takeover Tour game, recording her first goal, then later a hat trick, marking the first at a Takeover game.
Kayle Osbourne
Kayle Osbourne has been having an incredible run with the Sirens this season, being the only goaltender in the league to play every game for their team. Now ranking second overall for goalie wins, only behind Aerin Frankel from the Boston Fleet. She currently is sitting with a 92.2% save percentage, allowing only 21 goals on 249 shots, through the Sirens' first 10 games.
Up Next
Up next, the New York Sirens head north of the border to take on the Toronto Sceptres, January 7th. In their last meeting, the visiting Sceptres took the edge, beating New York 4-3. The Sirens look to redeem this loss with a big win at the Coca-Cola Coliseum and extend their three-game win streak.
