The women’s tournament continued with four teams in action as Sweden continued to stun and Czechia found their first win.
Starting the day with France vs Sweden. France was on the hunt for their first win in the tournament after falling in back-to-back games. While Sweden looked to remain undefeated in Group B as conversations continued around if they’ve outgrown the division. It didn’t take long for Sweden to strike with Minnesota-Duluth Bulldog senior Thea Johansson finding her fourth of the tournament. The team added another pair in the first period, taking a 3-0 lead heading into the second period. Sweden found another early to take the game 4-0.
Sweden is back in action Tuesday as they take on Japan in their final game of the round-robin. Sweden will look to enter the quarterfinal undefeated while Japan looks to lock up their spot. Look out for Thea Johansson in the match who has been having an incredible tournament, finding her stride early.
Closing out the day was Czechia vs Finland. Both teams were on the hunt for their first win in the tournament. But it was Czechia who closed it, getting a much needed win after falling in their first two matchups. The Czech’s seemed to have the edge in the match, scoring two in the first period including one from Montreal Victoire Natálie Mlýnková for her second of the tournament. The game continued with end-to-end play with both backends locked down as Anni Keisala and Klara Peslarova’s goaltending on full display.
Czechia is back in action tomorrow as they take on Canada. This is Czechia’s last game in the round-robin and will look to climb the standings with another win. Well, Canada looks to continue their hot start to the tournament as they play three games in three days. In the match look out for Kristýna Kaltounková who has had a pretty quiet tournament so far, with one goal. Kaltounková currently leads the PWHL in goals and has been a difference maker for the New York Sirens all season, expect to see her settle in and break out. For Canada watch out for Daryl Watts, who is leading the Toronto Sceptres this season with 11 points, she was able to get her first at the end of Canada’s opening match against Switzerland. Earlier this season she became the second player to reach the 50 point milestone in the PWHL, expect her to have an impact for Canada throughout the tournament.
