Charge Take Three Straight

ree

After winning two straight on the road, the Charge headed home to TD Place to take on the 6-1 Fleet, in a 8 round shootout thriller.

Boston came out hot in the first period, looking to carry their momentum from their 3-1 over the Seattle Torrent before the holiday break. But Gwyneth Philips was not letting anything past, with 15 saves in the first period.

The Ottawa Charge may have been off to a slow start, but all it takes is one shot, and Stephanie Markowski delivered, giving the Charge the lead heading into the second period.

The second period kicked off the same way with Boston on a hot streak, although this time they’d strike first with Olivia Mobley off the rebound shot by Susanna Tapani. Just under 8 minutes later, #8 for the Fleet, Hayley Winn, found the back of the net for her first goal in the PWHL.

The third period kicked off with Boston continuing to dominate puck possession, but midway through, Ottawa would take over. The Charge found some good looks short-handed but weren’t able to finish. With just under 3 minutes left in the third period, rookie Fanuza Kadirova took a shot that got lost in Aerin Frankel's padding, which came out into the net, to tie the game. With neither team being able to finish the game headed to overtime.

The Charge came out and continued to control the puck, midway through Boston was able to find some good looks, but Philips wasn’t having it. Ottawa got off a few more shots, but Frankel stood strong in net, sending the game to a shootout.

Both Philips and Frankel held off on the first round of shots. Then it was rookie, Hayley Winn for the Fleet, who found a way past Philips to get her second of the day, and give Boston the lead in the shootout. But Kateřina Mrázová quickly took that lead away, with patience and control in front of the net, moving Frankel out of the way.

Both goaltenders continued to stand strong, stopping the rest of the shots until round 7. Starting with Hannah Brandt finding the back of the net for the Fleet, followed by Ottawa Captain, Brianne Jenner, finding a way past Frankel. Both teams sent out the same shooters, but it would be Brianne Jenner who found the game-winner in front of the home crowd.

With the win, Ottawa moves up to 6th place in the standings, but have a week off before returning back to TD Place when they take on the Minnesota Frost. The Charge are looking to lock up their second regulation win, after winning three-straight in overtime. While the Fleet looks to rally on their week off, before hitting the road again for their first stop of the Takeover Tour in Detroit as they take on the Vancouver Goldeneyes.
