Canada and Switzerland Advance to Semi-Finals

In an electric day of action and upsets Canada and Switzerland have clinched their spot in the semi-final. 

Starting the day was Canada taking on Germany. Both countries were riding in on a high from the preliminary round, shaping up for an incredible performance on both ends. It was Brianne Jenner getting things started for the Canadians to take the early lead. Germany continued to fend off the Canadian offence, maintaining that one goal deficit before Claire Thompson struck near the end of the first period, firing one from the blue line, going five-hole to give the Canadians a 2-0 lead. 

In the second period, it was Sarah Fillier with a shot from the side, bouncing off the goaltenders blocker and into the net to extend the Canadian lead. Starting off the third was Blayre Turnbull for her first of the tournament before the Germans struck back with Franziska Feldmeier, making history with Germany’s first-ever goal against the Canadians.

The game also saw the return of Captain Clutch who was ruled out of Canada’s lineup the last two games due to a lower body injury. In true Clutch fashion Poulin scored Canada’s final goal of the game, cutting Germany’s momentum as they looked to make a comeback. 

In the second game of the day it was Finland taking on Switzerland in the battle of Group A. In the game it was Alina Müller who was the hero scoring the lone goal leading Switzerland to a 1-0 upset over Finland. In net holding it down was Andrea Braendli with the shutout for Switzerland, on the other end it was Sanni Ahola keeping the game within reach for the Finns. 

With the conclusion of the quarterfinal the semi-final matchups have been locked in. Starting the round is the US taking on Sweden and Canada taking on Switzerland.
